Biography:

Adam Bothwell was the second son of Francis Bothwell of Edinburgh, a Lord of Session, and Janet Richardson. He was appointed Bishop of Orkney in 1562, but exchanged the Bishopric about 1569 for the Abbacy of Holyroodhouse, in which capacity he officiated at the marriage of Mary Queen of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell. His eldest son inherited the Abbey at his death, and was raised to the peerage as Lord Holyroodhouse. An inventory of part of his library made after his death in 1594 has been published in Warrender Papers Vol.2, Scottish Historical Society, Edinburgh, 1932, but does not contain all the surviving books.
