Beresford, Marcus, Earl of Tyrone (1694 -1763)

Marcus Beresford was born 16 July 1694, the only son of Sir Tristram Beresford 3rd Baronet, and Nichola Sophia youngest daughter and coheir of Hugh Hamilton, Baron of Glenawly. He married 16 July 1717, Catherine Poer, Baroness La Poer, daughter and heir of James La Poer, 3rd Earl of Tyrone. Together they had fifteen children. He was created Baron Beresford and Viscount Tyrone in the peerage of Ireland 4 November 1720, and was elevated to Earl of Tyrone 18 July 1746. A staunch freemason, he served as Grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of Ireland from 1736 to 1738. He died 4 April 1763 and was succeeded by his eldest son George De la Poer who was created Marquess of Waterford in 1789.
