Fiennes-Pelham-Clinton, Henry Pelham, 4th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme (1785 -1851)

Henry Pelham Pelham Clinton was the son of Thomas, 3rd Duke of Newcastle, and Anna Maria Stanhope, youngest daughter of William, 2nd Earl of Harrington. He succeeded his father as 4th Duke of Newcastle in 1795, when he was only ten years old. Educated at Eton, he founded the Newcastle Prize at Eton in 1829. He married, 18 July 1807, Georgiana Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Miller Mundy Esq. of Shipley in Derbyshire, and was made a Knight of the Garter in 1812. A rigid conservative and an unpopular landlord, a mob burned down his house of Nottingham Castle in 1831. He added largely to the library formed by his grandfather, Henry, 2nd Duke of Newcastle, many of the finest books and manuscripts coming from his purchase of the library of Thomas Johnes of Hafod, the translator of Froissart. The library was finally sold in 1937 and 1938, though a number of the books and manuscripts had already been dispersed.
