Hay, George, Earl of Gifford (1822 -1862)

George Hay, Earl of Clifford, was the eldest son of George, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale, and Susan Montagu, third daughter of William, 5th Duke of Manchester. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was admitted, 2 December 1841, matriculating Michaelmas 1842, then migrating to Trinity Hall June 1844, where he took his M.A. 1845. He was Captain in the East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry 1850, Private Secretary to the Secretary for War 1854 1855, and Member of Parliament for Totnes 1855 1862. He married, 13 October 1862, Helen Selina, eldest daughter of Thomas Sheridan, and Dowager Lady Dufferin and Claneboye. His library of mostly musical works, passed to her son from her previous marriage, Frederick Temple Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava. The Earl died without issue in his father's lifetime.
