Hammond-Lucy, George (1789 -1845)

George Hammond Lucy was born 8 June 1789, the first son of the Rev. John Hammond Lucy, of Charlecote Park, Warwickshire, and Maria, daughter of John and Sarah Lane, of Bentley Hall, Staffordshire. In 1804 he attended Harrow School, followed by study at Christ Church, Oxford. He married 2 December 1823 Mary Elizabeth Williams (1803-1889), daughter of Sir John Williams, 1st Bt., of Bodelwyddan, Flintshire. They had eight children. That same year George inherited Charlecote, and set about restoring the house to its original style of an Elizabethan house.

In 1862 Mary wrote a biography of the Lucys of Charlecote, in which she claims that her husband “was fond of the study of heraldry and took great pains in tracing the pedigree of his ancestors”. In 1883 Mary wrote an engaging account of her life for her grandchildren, which was discovered in a desk many years after her death, and published as Mistress of Charlecote The Memoirs of Mary Elizabeth Lucy.
