Percy, Hugh Algernon, 10th Duke of Northumberland (1914 -1988)

Hugh Algernon Percy, 10th Duke of Northumberland, was born 6 April 1914, the son of Alan Percy, 8th Duke of Northumberland, and Lady Helen Gordon-Lennox. In his military career he was commissioned into the Northumberland Hussars. In 1940, as a Lieutenant, he transferred to the Royal Artillery. In 1947, as a Captain, he transferred back to the Northumberland Hussars. His many official appointments included Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland 1956-1984, Lord Steward of H.M. Household 1973-1988, President of the Royal Agricultural Society of England 1956 and 1962, Chairman of the Medical Research Council 1969-1977, and President of the Royal Agricultural Society of England 1956 and 1962. He married 12 June 1946 Lady Elizabeth Diana Montagu Douglas Scott, daughter of Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 8th Duke of Buccleuch, and Vreda Esther Mary Lascelles. They had seven children. He died 11 October 1988, and was succeeded by Henry Alan Walter Richard Percy, as 11th Duke of Northumberland.
