Biography: 

The Reverend George Ashby was born in London in 1724. He was educated at Croydon and Westminster Schools and St John's College, Cambridge, were he was admitted in October 1740, and took his B.A. in 1744, his M.A. 1748, and his B.D. in 1756. He was President of St John's College, Cambridge, and Rector of Hungerton and of Twyford in Leicestershire, and subsequently of Barrow in Suffolk, of Bampton in Oxfordshire and Stansfield in Suffolk. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1774. He left his valuable library to his amanuensis Thomas Lyas, and it was sold soon after to a bookseller in Bury St Edmunds and dispersed. A number of his manuscript collections are in the British Library (Egerton Mss 2371 and 2374 and Cole Mss 20,41, &c.)
