Biography: 

Charles Cornwallis was the eldest son of Frederick Cornwallis, 1st Baron Cornwallis, and his first wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Ashburnham of Ashburnham in Sussex. He was Member of Parliament for Eye in Suffolk 1660 1662, when he succeeded his father. He was a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber in 1660, and Surveyor of the Customs in 1661, and made a Knight of the Bath at the coronation of Charles II, 23 April 1661. He married Margaret, daughter of Sir Thomas Playsted, of Arlington in Sussex, and they had five sons. The library of Charles Cornwallis, 2nd Marquess, was sold by Mr Deck of Bury St Edmunds 3 November 1823.
