Gray's Inn was originally the London House of the Greys, Barons Grey of Codnor. In the reign of Edward III, the Gentlemen Students of Gray's Inn are said to have taken a grant of their house from Lord Grey, whose arms, Barry of six Argent and Azure, they used, but within a bordure compony or and azure. In Tudor times they were granted the arms Sable a griffin segreant or, which they now bear.
