Schomberg Henry Kerr, 9th Marquess of Lothian, was the second son of John William Robert Kerr, 7th Marquess, and Lady Cecil Chetwynd Talbot, younger daughter of the 2nd Earl Talbot. He was educated at Glenalmond, Eton and New College, Oxford. He married, 23 February 1865, Victoria Alexandrina, eldest daughter of Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch. He was on Sir J. Outram's staff in Persia in 1857, entered the diplomatic service and became 2nd Secretary at Frankfurt in 1862, and at Madrid and Vienna in 1865. He succeeded to the title on the death of his elder brother William Schomberg Robert, 8th Marquess in 1870. He was Secretary of State for Scotland, and Keeper of the Privy Seal 1887 1892. Illuminated manuscripts, incunabula, and Americana from the famous libraries of the Marquess of Lothian removed from Blickling Hall, Norfolk, and Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian were sold at auction at the American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, New York 27 and 28 January 1932. The remaining part of the Newbattle Abbey library was bequeathed to the National Library of Scotland by Philip Henry, 11th Marquess, who died in 1940.
