Biography: 

Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort, was the only son of Charles Noel, 4th Duke, and Elizabeth Berkeley, sister and heir of Norborn, Lord Bottetourt, whose Barony she inherited. He went up to Oriel College, Oxford, matriculating as a nobleman 18 July 1760 and was made a D.C.L. 7 July 1763. From 1768 to 1770, he was Master of the Horse to the Queen Consort. Colonel of the Monmouthshire Militia 23 December 1771, and a Colonel in the Army 14 March 1794, he was Recorder of Cambridge 1788 1799, and of Scarborough 1788, and Lord Lieutenant of the Counties of Monmouth, Brecon and Leicester. He was made a Knight of the Garter 2 June 1786. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Admiral the Hon. Edward Boscawen. The library of the Dowager Duchess of Beaufort was sold at Sotheby's 31 July 1890.
