NotesNote on the front flyleaf: “I made a speech to an Assembly composed of seven different tribes in British Columbia. An interpreter translated my speech into Chinook sentence by sentence, and each sentence was retranslated for the benefit of each tribe by one of their number who also knew Chinook. Consequently there was an interval of fully ten minutes between each sentence. D & A. May 1899”.
