He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, and graduated B.A. in 1754 and M.A. in 1757. In the latter year he was returned Member of Parliament for Trim, but he succeeded his father in the barony before he could take his seat. He married, 6 February 1759, Anne, eldest daughter of Arthur Hill, afterwards Hill Trevor, and 1st Viscount Dungannon. He was created Viscount Wellesley of Dangan Castle and Earl of Mornington 2 October 1760. He was well known as an amateur musician. In 1764, Trinity College Dublin conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Music. His third son Arthur was the famous Duke of Wellington. On the death of the 5th Earl of Mornington, unmarried, in 1863, the title devolved upon his cousin, the 2nd Duke of Wellington. The library of the 1st Earl was sold with that of his eldest son, Richard Colley Wellesley, 2nd Earl and Marquess Wellesley at auction by R.H., T. and C. Evans in London on 17 January 1843.
