Richard Bridgeman, of Combes Hall, Suffolk, was the fifth son of John Bridgeman, Bishop of Chester (1577-1652) and Elizabeth Helyar, daughter of Dr Helyar, Canon of Exeter, and Archdeacon of Barnstaple. He married Katherine Watson, and they had a son, William (1646-1699), who became Secretary to the Admiralty, and Clerk to the Privy Council. Richard Bridgeman served as a merchant for the East India Company.
