Butler, John, 17th Earl of Ormonde and Ossory (1740 -1795)

John Butler, 17th Earl of Ormonde and Ossory, was born 10 December 1740, the only son of Walter Butler, 16th Earl, and Ellen, daughter of Nicholas Morres of Lataragh, Tipperary. He was Member of Parliament for Gowran 1776-1779 and for Kilkenney 1790-1791, in which year his right to the peerage and to sit in the Irish House of Lords was acknowledged by Parliament. He married, 14 February 1769, Lady Francis Susan Elizabeth, daughter and sole heir of John Wandesford, Earl of Wandesford. The Greek phi of the conceit is for the F of her christian name. The Earl died 25 December 1795 and was succeeded by his eldest son Walter.
