Campbell , George Douglas, 8th Duke of Argyll (1823 -1900)

George Douglas Campbell, the only son of John Douglas Edward Henry Campbell 7th Duke of Argyll and Elizabeth, eldest daughter of William Campbell of Fairfield, was born 30 April 1823. He married three times, his first wife being Lady Elizabeth Georgiana, eldest daughter of the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. They had five sons and seven daughters. His principal appointments were Lord Privy Seal 1852-1855, 1859-1866 and 1880-1881; Post Master General 1855-1858; and Secretary of State for India 1868-1874. He was created Duke of Argyll in the peerage of the United Kingdom April 1892. He was a knight of the Garter, and of the Thistle, a Fellow of The Royal Society, Chancellor of St Andrews University and a Trustee of the British Museum. He died 24 April 1900, and was succeeded by his eldest son.
