Cecil, James, 1st Marquess of Salisbury (1748 -1823)
James Cecil was the only surviving son of James, 6th Earl of Salisbury, and Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Edward Keet Esq., of Canterbury. He succeeded his father as 7th Earl of Salisbury in 1780. He was Lord Chamberlain to George III from 1783 to 1804 and was made Marquess of Salisbury 18 August 1789 and a Knight of the Garter in 1793. He married, 2 December 1773, Emily Mary Hill, second daughter of Wills, 1st Marquess of Downshire, and they had one son and two daughters. She survived him and died in a fire in the West wing of Hatfield House 27 November 1835.
