Dawson, Richard, 1st Earl of Dartrey (1817 -1897)

Richard Dawson was the elder son of Richard Thomas Dawson, 2nd Baron Cremorne, and Anne Elizabeth Emily, third daughter of John Whaley, of Whaley Abbey, County Wicklow. He succeeded his father in 1827. He was educated at Eton and Christchurch, Oxford, where he matriculated 22 October 1835. He married, 12 July 1841, Augusta, second daughter of Edward Stanley Esq., of Cross Hall in Lancashire, and was created Baron Dartrey of Dawson's Castle 20 September 1847, and made a Knight of St Patrick 22 February 1855. He was a Lord in Waiting to Queen Victoria 1857 1858 and 1859 1866, and was created Earl of Dartrey 12 July 1866. As well as being a model landlord, he was an excellent amateur chess player. The Earldom became extinct at the death of the 3rd Earl on 9 February 1933.
