Duncan, Robert Dundas, 1st Earl of Camperdown (1785 -1859)

Robert Dundas Duncan, 2nd Viscount Duncan, was the third but eldest surviving son of Admiral Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan, and Henrietta, second daughter of Robert Dundas of Arniston, Lord President of the Court of Session. He succeeded his father 4 August 1804, and married, 8 January 1805, Janet, daughter of Sir Hew Hamilton Dalrymple, Baronet. He was created Earl of Camperdown at the coronation of William IV, 12 September 1831, and made a Knight of the Thistle in 1848. It could possibly be the stamp of his son Adam, 2nd Earl (1812 1867). The 1st Earl assumed the additional surname of Haldane, that of his maternal grandmother.
