Erskine, James St Clair, 2nd Earl of Rosslyn (1762 -1837)

John, 6th Lord Erskine and 1st Earl of Mar of the Erskine line, Regent of Scotland, was the third, but eldest surviving, son of John, 5th Lord Erskine, and Margaret Campbell, daughter of Archibald, 2nd Earl of Argyll. He married, about 29 January 1557, Annabella, daughter of Sir William Murray of Tullibardine. On 23 June 1565, Queen Mary by her letters patent restored him to the Earldom of Mar, which he claimed by descent in the female line. After the marriage of Mary and the Earl of Bothwell he took charge of the young King, James VI, and on the death of Lennox in 1571, he became Regent until his own death in October 1572.
