Fane, Francis, Sir (1612 -1681)
Sir Francis Fane of Fulbeck in Lincolnshire and Aston in Yorkshire was the third, but second surviving son of Francis Fane, 1st Earl of Westmorland, and Mary, daughter and heir of Sir Anthony Mildmay, of Apethorpe in Northamptonshire. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge, where he was made an M.A. in 1631. Created a Knight of the Bath at the Coronation of Charles I, 1st February 1626, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1636, he was Governor of Doncaster and of Lincoln for Charles I during the Civil War. He married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of William West, of Firbeck in Yorkshire, widow of John, Lord Darcy, and coheir of her brother, John West. His grandson, Thomas, succeeded as 8th Earl of Westmorland in 1762.
