Herbert, Edward James, 3rd Earl of Powis (1818 -1891)

Edward James Herbert, was the eldest son of Edward Herbert [formerly Clive], 2nd Earl of Powis, and Lucy, third daughter of James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose. Styled Viscount Clive 1839 1848, he was educated at Eton and St John's College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. 1840, and LL.D. 1842. He was elected Member of Parliament for North Shropshire 1843 1848, succeeded his father as Earl of Powis in 1848, and was Lieutenant Colonel of the South Shropshire Yeomanry 1848, D.C.L. of Oxford University 1857, Lord Lord Lieutenant of Montgomery 1877 1891, and High Steward of Cambridge University 1863 1891. He never married, and was succeeded by his nephew, George Charles, 4th Earl. There were Powis sales at Sotheby's 17 January 1956 and 20 March 1967.
