Kennedy, John, 5th Earl of Cassilis (1575 -1615)

John Kennedy, 5th Earl of Cassilis, was the eldest son of Gilbert, 4th Earl of Cassilis, and his wife, Margaret, daughter of John Lyon, 7th Lord Glamis. He married, in 1597, Jean widow of John Maitland 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane, Chancellor of Scotland and only daughter and heir of James Fleming 4th Lord Fleming. The desire "to keep his estate entire" was the cause of his marrying a woman past childbearing. She died 23 June 1609 age fifty-five. He was Lord Treasurer of Scotland in March 1599, but was removed from office in the same year, and died without issue before 14 November 1615, when the title passed to his nephew, another John, son of Hew Kennedy and Katherine MacDowall. It is just possible that the stamp is that of the nephew.
