Manners, John Henry (1778 -1857)
Styled Lord Roos from birth, John Henry Manners was born at Knightsbridge, London, the eldest son of Charles Manners, 4th Duke of Rutland, by Lady Mary Isabella Somerset, daughter of Charles Somerset, 4th Duke of Beaufort. When his father succeeded to the dukedom in 1779, he became known as the Marquess of Granby. In 1787 he succeeded to the dukedom on the death of his father.
He received his education at Ealing School London, after which he attended Trinity College Cambridge, graduating with a Master of Arts in 1797.
He married Lady Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle, on 22 April 1799, and had ten children, including the 6thand 7thDukes of Rutland. After his wife’s death in 1845, Lord Manners never remarried. Between 1799 and 1857 he served as Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, and between 1800 and 1835, he also held the office of High Steward of Cambridge. In 1803 he was awarded the Order of the Garter.
