Percy, Hugh, Bishop of Carlisle (1784 -1856)

Hugh Percy was the third son of Algernon 1st Earl of Beverley, second son of Hugh Smithson, 1st Duke of Northumberland, and Isabella Susanna, second daughter of Peter Burrell Esq. of Beckenham in Kent. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated M.A. in 1805, and D.D. in 1825, He subsequently moved to St John's College, Cambridge. He took orders, and married, 19 May 1806, Mary, eldest daughter of Manners Sutton, Archbishop of Canterbury; she died in 1831, and in 1840 he married secondly Mary, daughter of Sir William Johnstone Hope, and Maid of Honour to Queen Adelaide. He had a long and prosperous career in the church and was Archdeacon of Canterbury in 1822, Bishop of Rochester in June 1827, and Bishop of Carlisle in September of the same year. His eldest son William married Emily daughter of Bishop Reginald Heber and heir to her uncle Richard Heber and took the additional name of Heber.
