Proby, William, 5th Earl of Carysfort (1836 -1909)
William Proby was born 18 January 1836, the youngest son of Granville Leveson Proby, 3rd Earl of Carysfort, and Isabella, daughter of Hugh Howard, a younger son of the first Countess of Wicklow. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his M.A. in 1858. He married, 11 April 1860, Charlotte Mary, eldest daughter of the Reverend Robert Boothby Heathcote, Rector of Chingford in Essex. His appointments include Captain in the Wicklow Militia 1861 1872, Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for Huntingdonshire, and Lord Lieutenant of County Wicklow and High Sheriff from 1865 1866. He was elected a Knight of the Order of St Patrick 2 June 1869, and succeeded his elder brother in 1872. He died without issue 4 September 1909, when the title became extinct. He inherited a valuable library from the 1st Earl and added to it considerably. A portion of it was sold in 1921.
