Rylands, Thomas Glazebrook (1818 -1900)

Thomas Glazebrook Esq., of Highfields, Cheshire, was born in 1818, the second son of John Rylands of Bewsey House, Lanc, ashire, and Martha, daughter of the Rev. James Glazebrook. He married firstly, in 1845, Jane Chapman daughter of William Ragg Esq. by whom he had several children; and secondly, in 1860, Elizabeth, daughter of Richard M. W. Dewhurst of Kenyon House, Lancashire. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a Justice of the Peace for Warrington, and was Mayor of Warrington 1858-1859. A large part of his fortune, which came from his wire-manufacturing factory in Warrington, was spent in assembling an impressive library. On his death in 1900 he bequeathed his collection of 2700 items to the University of Liverpool. The collection included nineteen manuscripts, and 116 books published before 1536. They are described in John Sampson.
