Sanderson, Robert, Bishop of Lincoln (1587 -1663)

Robert Sanderson was the second son of Robert Sanderson, of Gilthwaite Hall in Yorkshire. He was educated at Rotherham Grammar School and Lincoln College, Oxford, where he took his B.A. 1606, M.A. 1608; B.D. 1616; D.D. 1636, and was elected a Fellow of the College in 1606. In 1611 he became Rector of Wyberton and Boothby Paynal in Lincolnshire. He was a royal chaplain to Charles I, and in 1660 was consecrated Bishop of Lincoln. Duff attributed this stamp to Arthur Annesley, Earl of Anglesey (1614 1686) but the arms are those attributed by Guillim to Robert Sanderson, and Clements and the Ellis Catalogue both favoured that attribution. The arms of Annesley are Paly of six argent and azure a bend gules, and those of Robert Saunderson, according to Guillim, Paly of six argent and azure a bend sable, so the attribution is presumably based on an inscription
