Scott, Elizabeth, Duchess of Buccleuch (1743 -1827)

Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Lady Mary Montagu and George Brudenell, who in 1766 by royal decree was granted the extinct dukedom of Montagu, becoming the 1st Duke of Montagu. On the duke’s death in 1799, without male heir, the dukedom became extinct. In 1767 Elizabeth married Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch in Montagu House, Whitehall, London. Together they had seven children. Buccleuch wishing to perpetuate the Montagu name, adopted the unhyphenated surname Montagu Scott.
