Shirley, Evelyn Philip (1812 -1882)

Evelyn Philip Shirley of Ettington Park in Warwickshire and Lough Fea in County Monaghan was the eldest son of Evelyn John Shirley, and Eliza, only daughter and heir of Arthur Stanhope, cousin of George Philip, 8th Earl of Chesterfield. He was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he matriculated as a Gentleman Commoner 15 October 1830, and took his B.A. in 1834 and his M.A. in 1837. He was an enthusiast all his life for history, genealogy and horticulture. He was Member of Parliament for County Monaghan 1841 1847, and for Warwickshire 1853 65. He married, 4 August 1842, Mary Clara Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Edmund Hungerford Lechmere 2nd Baronet. He was a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Monaghan in 1837 and of Warwickshire in 1867. An antiquary, and the historian of the Shirley family, he collected two libraries, one in each of his principal houses. A printed catalogue of the library of books on Ireland was printed in 1871. A selection from his library was sold at Sotheby's 16 July 1924, and the remainder dispersed at two further sales at Sotheby's 28 April and 12 May 1947.
