Silver, Stephen William (1819 -1905)

S. W. Silver of Letcombe Manor, Wantage and 3 York Gate, Regent's Park, London, was head of the Australian firm of S. W. Silver & Co of Cornhill, which during the 1850s transacted a great deal of official and private business with Australia. He was a Fellow of the Linnaean Society. ,Silvertown in the London Borough of Woolwich, where he had extensive business interests, was named in his honour. He collected a large library of works on geography, particularly on the British Empire, which is now held by the Royal Geographical Society of
South Australia. A printed catalogue of the York Gate Library was compiled by S. W. Silver, with the assistance of E. A. Petherick and published in 1886.
