Spencer-Churchill, John Winston (1822 -1883)

Born 2 June 1822, John Churchill was the eldest son of George, 6th Duke of Marlborough, and Jane, eldest daughter of George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway. He was created a Knight of the Garter, and served as Member of Parliament for Woodstock 1840-1845 and 1847-1857. He married, 12 July 1843, Frances Anne Emily Vane, daughter of the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. He succeeded his father as 7th Duke on 1 July 1857. His other appointments were Lord Steward of the Household 1866-1867, Lord President of the Council 1867-1868 and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1876-1880. He died 5 July 1883, and was succeeded by his eldest son George Charles, 8th Duke.
