Biography: 

Sir Richard Browne was the only son of Christopher Browne of Sayes Court, Deptford and Thomasine Gonson. He served both Charles I and Charles II as Resident at the Court of France, and was created a baronet in 1649 by Charles II. His only daughter married the diarist John Evelyn who was his executor and residuary legatee. The library was sold at Christie's 22 23 June 1977 by order of the Evelyn trustees. The catalogue contains a full account of the bookstamps used by Sir Richard and his son in law John Evelyn, admirably illustrated.
