Family Name:

George Heriot, goldsmith of Edinburgh, and jeweller to James VI and to Queen Anne of Denmark, died 12 February 1624 leaving the bulk of his large fortune for the erection and maintenance of a hospital `for the education, nursing, and upbringing of youth, being puir orphans and fatherless children of decayet burgesses and freemen of the said burgh, destitute, and left without means'. A magnificent building was erected on the High Riggs, started in 1628 but not completed until 1700. Originally a residential boy's school for about one hundred and eighty boys, it has since become successively a day school and a private day school, and a private day school for both sexes, though some scholarships are still given.
