Biography:

John Montagu was born at Boughton 29 March 1690, the third and youngest but eldest surviving son of Ralph Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu, and his first wife, Elizabeth Wriothesley, daughter of Thomas Earl of Southampton. He succeeded to the title in 1709. He visited the Duke of Marlborough's headquarters in Flanders, but does not seem to have held military rank. Subsequently he was appointed Colonel of the 1st Troop of Horse Guards and Gold Stick by George I in 1714, and was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians at his own request in 1717. He was created a Knight of the Garter 30 April 1718, and Grand Master of the Order of the Bath in 1725. In 1740 he was appointed Master of the Great Wardrobe, and Master General of the Ordnance. He married Mary, fourth daughter and coheir of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. They had two sons and three daughters, but both the boys predeceased their father, and the title became extinct at his death 6 July 1749. Among his books are a number which belonged to Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle (d.1688) first husband of Elizabeth Cavendish, his father's second wife.
