Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, was founded by a provision in the will of Lady Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex, widow of Thomas Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex. She died in 1589, and in 1594, a Royal Charter was granted for the foundation of a college. Building began in 1595, and the first students were admitted to `the College of the Lady Frances Sidney Sussex' was opened for students in August 1598. The arms of the College are those of the founder. They are said to have been granted to the College in 1675 by Sir Edward Walker, Garter King of Arms.
