Bentinck, Duke of Portland N/A

This stamp has been variously attributed to the 1st and 2nd Dukes and to Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, the wife of the 2nd Duke. Many of the books, particularly those from the library of James II belonged to the 1st Duke, but many others can not have done. The stamps are clearly nineteenth-century in style, and it seems almost certain that they were added to the whole library under the orders of one of the nineteenth-century dukes. The clumsy way in which the stamps are added to the books bound for James II as Duke of York favours this conclusion.
