Boswell, John (1710 -1780)
Dr John Boswell was the second son of James Boswell of Auchinleck, and Elizabeth Bruce, daughter of Alexander, 2nd Earl of Kincardine. He was the younger brother of Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, father of the biographer of Dr Johnson. Educated at the University of Leiden, where he matriculated 26 August 1733 at the age of 26, he studied under Boerhaave, and took his Doctor of Medicine 1 November 1736. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1748, served as their Treasurer for many years and was President of the College 1770 1772. He married Anne, daughter of Robert Cramond Esq and had three sons and two daughters.
