Byng, George Stevens, 2nd Earl of Strafford (1806 -1886)
George Stevens Byng, Viscount Enfield, was the eldest son of Field Marshall John Byng, 1st Earl of Strafford, one of the most distinguished commanders of the Peninsular War, and Mary Stevens eldest daughter and coheir of Peter Mackenzie of Grove House, Middlesex. He was educated at Sandhurst, and was made Captain in the Rifle Brigade, Honorary Colonel of the West Middlesex Militia Rifles. He was also Member of Parliament for Milborne Port 1831, Poole 1835 1837, Chatham 1837 1852, Lord of the Treasury 1834, Comptroller and Treasurer of the Household 1841, and Secretary of the Board of Control 1846 1847. He was summoned to Parliament as Baron Strafford in 1853, and succeeded his father in the Earldom in 1860. He married, firstly, 7 March 1829, Agnes Paget, fifth daughter of the 1st Marquess of Angelsey. She died 9 October 1845. He married secondly, 16 March 1848, Harriet Elizabeth Cavendish, the younger daughter of the 1st Baron Chesham.
