Campbell, John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland, 9th Duke of Argyll (1845 -1914)
John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell was born on 6 August 1845 at Stafford House, St. James's, Westminster, the son of George John Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll and Lady Elizabeth Georgiana Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. From birth he was styled Earl of Campbell. In 1847, when he was twenty-one months old, his father succeeded as 8th Duke of Argyll, and he assumed the courtesy title Marquess of Lorne. He was educated at Eton College, and at Trinity College, Cambridge,
As Liberal Member of Parliament he represented Argyllshire between 1868 and 1878, but made little impression in politics.
He married Princess Louise Caroline Alberta Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, fourth daughter of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, on 21 March 1871, when he was also made a Knight of the Order of the Thistle. The marriage was childless and unhappy, and they spent long periods apart.
In October 1878 he became the fourth Governor-General of Canada, a position he held until 1883. As Governor-General he displayed an intense interest in Canada and Canadians, traveling throughout the country, encouraging the establishment of numerous institutions, such as the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Royal Society of Canada, and the National Gallery of Canada. In 1883 he returned to Britain, when his book Memories of Canada and Scotland, which show a deep appreciation of Canada's physical beauty, was published.
He was appointed Governor and Constable of Windsor Castle from 1892 to 1914, and he sat as MP for Manchester South from 1895 until the death of his father on 24 April 1900, when he succeeded as 9th Duke. He and Princess Louise lived at Kensington Palace until his death from double pneumonia on 2 May 1914 at age 68 at Kent House, Cowes, Isle of Wight, from pneumonia. He was buried on 15 May 1914 at Argyll Mausoleum, Kilmun, Argyllshire.
