De Stacpoole, George Marie Stanislaus Koska, 3rd Duke De Stacpoole (1829 -1896)

George Marie Stanislaus Koska De Stacpoole, 3rd Duke De Stacpoole, was educated at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. In 1859 he married Maria, daughter of Thomas Dunn of Bath House, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The marriage produced two children. On the death of his wife in 1872, he entered into holy orders and in 1876 was created a Domestic Prelate by Pope Pius IX. He was caught smuggling letters to the Bavarian Ambassador for Pius IX, and imprisoned in Castel Sant’ Angelo. He received the Order of Christ from a grateful Pope, an exclusive honour, later bestowed on Prinz von Bismarck. Stacpoole also received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
