Finch, Charles, 4th Earl of Winchilsea (1672 -1712)

Charles Finch, 4th Earl of Winchilsea, was the posthumous son of William Viscount Maidstone, who fell in the naval engagement with the Dutch 28 May 1672, and Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Wyndham of Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk. He succeeded his grandfather, Heneage, 3rd Earl of Winchilsea in 1689. He was Lieutenant Governor of Dover Castle, and Deputy Warden of the Cinque Ports, and Vice Admiral of Kent 1702 1705; Envoy Extraordinary to Hanover September 1702 to March 1703; and First Lord of Trade in 1711. He married, 26 September 1692, Sarah, daughter of Henry Nourse, of Woodlands in Wiltshire, but their only son predeceasing his father, the honours reverted to his uncle, Heneage Finch, 5th Earl, for whom Thomas Osborne sold the books in London 2 January and 26 April 1758.
