Fitzgerald, Charles James, Baron Lecale, of Ardglass (1756 -1810)

Probably the stamp of Charles James Fitzgerald, Lord Lecale of Ardglass in County Down, who was the third, but second surviving son of James, 1st Duke of Leinster, and Emilia Mary, daughter of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond and Lennox. He was educated by William Ogilvie. He entered the Royal Navy in 1772, and was a Member of the Irish Parliament from 1776 to 1800. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1778, and to Captain in 1780. He also served as a Commissioner of Customs in Ireland 1789 March 1792, Muster Master General for Ireland March 1792 to 1806. He was made a Rear Admiral in 1799, Vice Admiral of the White in 1804. He became Member of Parliament for Arundel in 1807. He was created Lord Lecale of Ardglass in the Irish peerage 27 December 1800. He married, 18 July 1808, Julia, widow of Thomas Carton, of Monkstown, County Dublin.
