Fitzgibbon, John, 2nd Earl of Clare (1792 -1851)
John Fitzgibbon, 2nd Earl of Clare, Baron Fitzgibbon in the peerage of Great Britain, and friend of Lord Byron, was the eldest son of John Fitzgibbon, 1st Earl of Clare, and Anne Whaley, eldest daughter of Richard Capel Whaley of Whaley Abbey, Co Wicklow. He succeeded his father in 1802, and was educated at Harrow School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he took a second class honours degree in Classics in 1812. He married, in 1826, Elizabeth Julia Georgiana, daughter of Peter Burrell, 1st Baron Gwydir. He was made a Privy Councillor in 1830, a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Hanover in 1835, and Knight of St Patrick in 1845. He had no children, and was succeeded by his younger brother Richard Hobart as 3rd Earl. Between 1830 and 1834, he was Governor General of Bombay. The Clare library was sold at auction in London, by Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodgson on the 12 August 1886 in 816 lots.
