Mary, of Modena, Queen Consort of James II (1658 -1718)
Mary Beatrice Anne Margaret Isabel was the only daughter of Alfonso IV D'Este, Duke of Modena and Laura Martinozzi. She was devout and wished to enter a nunnery, but was persuaded that it was her duty to convert England to Catholicism. She married James Duke of York, afterwards James II, by proxy at Modena 30 September 1673. She fled to France with the infant James Prince of Wales in 1688 and was honourably received by Louis XIV who placed the royal palace at St Germains at her disposal. She was joined by James II and there the royal couple spent the remainder of their lives.
