Ponsonby, Ashley George John (1831 -1898)
Ashley George John Ponsonby, of Hatherop Castle, Gloucestershire, was born 25 June 1831, the second son of William Francis Spencer Ponsonby, 1st Baron De Mauley, and Barbara daughter and heir of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 5th Earl of Shrewsbury. He was educated at Eton and admitted a pensioner of Trinity College Cambridge 5 July 1848, age seventeen. A Captain in the Grenadier Guards 1854-1855, he served in the Crimea. He was Member of Parliament for Cirencester 1852 1857 and 1859 1865, Deputy Lieutenant, and Justice of the Peace. He married, 21 July 1857, Louisa Frances Charlotte, second daughter of Lord Henry Gordon, fourth son of George Gordon, 9th Marquess of Huntly, and late Maid of Honour to Queen Victoria. He died 12 January 1898.
