Tresham, Thomas (1543 -1605)
Sir Thomas Tresham suceeded his grandfather in the Rushton and Lyveden estates in Northamptonshire in 1558. He was brought up as a Protestant, but became a Catholic in 1580, and was imprisoned for harbouring Edmund Campion. Sir Thomas had a bookplate of fifteen quarterings which is dated 29 June 1585. He presented a large number of books to St John's College, Oxford between 1598 and his death in 1605, a list of 117 titles of printed books presented by him appears in the Benefactor's Book cols. 22 29 under the date 1602, and most of the books, principally Fathers of the Church, remain in the College Library. The stamps may have been cut specially for the donation.
